New Starts in September

The summer holidays are nearly over, and we're looking forward to an action-packed autumn.

The kids are going back to school and we have loads of advice about helping your children adjust, school-gate etiquette and home-school relations.

We're also taking the opportunity in September to promote the old-fashioned stylishness of the handwritten letter. We're all increasingly addicted to modern gadgets, but there are occasions when handwriting is the only way to go.

Back to School

It's a big day in the life of every family when your child starts school, and we have plenty of advice about preparing your child in advance, instilling positive feelings in your child and knowing when to let go.

We also explore the parent-school relationship, and ways in which you can contribute to your child's experience, from prompt filling-in of forms and attendance at school events, to helping with fund-raising or joining the PTA.

With a new term starting you'll be spending plenty of time at the school-gate, so have a look at our etiquette guide. If you resist gossiping about other mums, boasting about your child's achievements, showing off, moaning about the teachers, or excluding parents from your group your school-gate experience will be greatly enhanced.

Finally, if the worst happens and you have to deal with bullying, we have a guide that will identify telltale signs and will advise you how to handle the situation both in relation to your child and the school.

The Art of Handwriting

Handwriting is increasingly being marginalised by people's dependence on mobiles, pdas and computers. But there are occasions when the anonymity of a typewritten letter really won't do.

Try and use handwriting when when extending an informal invitation, when thanking a host for hospitality, when congratulating someone or wishing them well.

Thank you letters are always better than emails and texts, they communicate both care and deliberation. Finally, letters of condolence are absolutely de rigueur.

If you're taking the trouble to handwrite a letter, choose your stationery with care. See our advice on writing paper, envelopes and corresponence cards.
